Trailer GVW – which trailer is suitable for a Category B licence? When is a special driving licence required for a trailer?
Definitions:
GVW – Gross Vehicle Weight – A value expressed in kilograms, indicating the maximum weight the vehicle may have, including its load. Item F2 in the registration certificate,
Unladen weight – the weight of the vehicle expressed in kilograms – item G in the registration certificate,
Permissible Payload – the maximum permissible weight of the load that can be carried on a trailer,
Light trailer – a trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) not exceeding 750 kg,
Heavy trailer – a trailer with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kg.
Information in the vehicle registration certificate regarding the towing capacity of the tow bar:
Maximum gross weight of a towed trailer – items O1 and O2:
O1 Maximum gross weight of a braked trailer – this tells us the maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of a trailer with overrun brakes that we can attach to our car
O2 Maximum gross weight of a trailer without brakes – this tells us the maximum gross weight of a trailer without overrun brakes that we can attach to our car.
A Category B driving licence entitles the holder to drive a vehicle or combination of vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg
A Category B96 driving licence entitles you to drive:
a motor vehicle with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes (excluding buses and motorcycles);
a motor vehicle as described above, together with a light trailer (i.e. one with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg);
a combination of vehicles with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 4.25 t, consisting of a motor vehicle as listed above (excluding buses and motorcycles) and a trailer other than a light trailer,
A Category B+E driving licence entitles the holder to drive:
a combination of vehicles comprising a vehicle as defined in category B (maximum authorised mass up to 3.5 tonnes) and a trailer whose actual maximum authorised mass does not exceed the actual maximum authorised mass of the towing vehicle.
Please note that Maximum Authorised Masses (MAM) apply in Poland. Example:
A Kujawiak trailer with a Maximum Authorised Mass of 750kg – the trailer’s own weight is 180kg; even when empty, it will be treated by the police and the Road Transport Inspectorate as a vehicle weighing 750kg. This can very often lead to a fine, for example for failing to pay the Viatool charge, if the combined weight of the vehicles exceeds 3,500 kg. When towing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) exceeding 750 kg, in many cases a trailer driving licence – i.e. category EB – will be required.
