VDI type-approval is mandatory for car transporters operating in Germany

In September 2024, a new standard came into force in Germany requiring car transporters to hold additional type-approval in accordance with the VDI 2700 standard. All Wiola car transporters comply with the new requirements, based on tests carried out by the Motor Transport Institute:

  • 8.1 – concerns the securing of loads in vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 4,500 kg, which are designed for the transport of cars.

The standard aims to improve road safety and prevent the vehicle being transported on the car transporter from becoming detached, for example during sudden braking or an accident. VDI 2700 is a regulation initiated by the multi-disciplinary association of German engineers. It is highly likely that this standard will be introduced across the European Union in the coming years.

The VDI certificate covers:

  • The tow truck ramp (available in steel and aluminium versions)
  • Aluminium floor panels
  • Access locks
  • VDI-certified transport straps

In the case of new trailers purchased in 2025, any customer wishing to obtain a VDI certificate must also purchase wheel chocks:

  • 4 units for single-car transport trailers
  • 8 units for car transporters designed to carry two cars

Only wheel chocks supplied by us meet the VDI standards specific to our trailers.

The lack of VDI approval makes it considerably more difficult to transport vehicles within Germany, as transport companies require the carrier to hold a certificate. During a roadside check, the police may prohibit such a combination from continuing its journey and issue the driver with a fine. We have been manufacturing VDI-approved bodywork since 2020, which is why we can issue this certificate for all Wiola car transporters manufactured after 1 January 2020.

To obtain the certificate, you must book a special VDI inspection, during which our authorised service centre will check:

  • The condition of the ramp’s sheet metal cladding or aluminium panels on the trailer
  • The condition of the bolted and riveted joints on the ramp
  • The number of VDI-compliant access locks (bearing a hologram)
  • The number and condition of transport straps in accordance with the VDI standard

Should any damage be detected, the service centre may undertake to repair or replace the damaged cladding.
The VDI certificate is issued within 30 days of the date on which the inspection is successfully completed, as confirmed by a service report accompanied by photographs. It is also necessary to purchase VDI-certified wheel chocks and transport straps.
